Foam Systems and Foam Concentrates – Safe Fire Protection for Ships, Industry and Offshore
Complete, fluorine-free foam solutions from BIOEX and FIREMIKS. We assist with PFOS replacement, documentation and adaptation of existing systems according to new regulatory requirements.
⚠️ Deadline Approaching: PFOS Ban from January 1, 2026
The EU and Norway are implementing stricter bans on fluorine compounds in fire suppression foam (PFAS/PFOS). If your ship system or industrial facility still uses fluorine-based foam, you must act now.
Moray Fire & Safety has expertise and experience with PFOS replacement:
✓ Mapping of existing systems
✓ Replacement with approved, fluorine-free foam concentrates (BIOEX / ECOPOL)
✓ Complete documentation and certification
✓ Full service from A to Z
Fluorine-Free Foam Systems for All Applications
From foam concentrate to complete dosing system – we deliver everything you need to be PFOS-compliant and operational.
PFOS-FREE
BIOEX Fluorine-Free Foam
100% PFAS-free – environmentally friendly, GreenScreen-certified foam concentrate that meets all new EU and regulatory requirements.
Class A and B fires
10–20 years shelf life
Documented fire suppression power on par with AFFF
Audun Hellesøy has led technical implementation of foam replacement and testing of fire suppression systems, with verified analyses documenting compliance with PFOS and PFOA requirements.
The first of a total of 50 vessels was completed in collaboration with Nordic Green Products and BioEx. Analyses and documentation available upon request.
Why This Is Important
PFOS and PFOA do not break down naturally. Foam replacement with documented testing ensures functional fire suppression – while the customer meets IMO, EU and national requirements.
✓ Documented results below limit values for PFOS and PFOA
✓ Compliance with IMO, EU regulations and Norwegian authorities
✓ Effective fire suppression without environmentally harmful impact
✓ Reference projects from 50+ maritime foam replacements
Regulatory Limit Values
PFOS limit value
10 mg/l
✓ Below limit value
PFOA limit value
0,025 mg/l
✓ Below limit value
Technical Requirements and Standards
All our foam systems and concentrates meet international fire safety standards.
What standards apply to foam systems?
Foam systems must meet the following standards:
NS-EN 1568 (parts 1-4): Foam concentrates for fire suppression
NFPA 11: Standard for Low-, Medium-, and High-Expansion Foam
IMO FSS Code: International requirements for marine systems
UL 162: Approval of foam concentrates
We ensure that all products and installations comply with applicable regulations.
What mixing ratios apply (3% / 6%)?
Correct dosing is critical for effective fire suppression. BIOEX and ECOPOL are typically supplied with the following mixing ratios:
3%: For hydrocarbons (gasoline, diesel, oil)
6%: For polar solvents (alcohol, ketones)
FIREMIKS proportioner ensures accurate dosing regardless of water pressure and flow rate.
How is foam stored – and how long does it last?
Foam concentrates often have long shelf life with proper storage (see product sheet for specific lifetime):
Stored in sealed, dark-colored tank
Protected from sunlight and extreme temperatures
Annual control of pH, viscosity and expansion recommended
We supply certified storage tanks with level gauges and temperature monitoring.
How often must the system be tested and documented?
Foam systems are tested regularly according to applicable standards:
Typically annual inspection: Visual inspection, pressure test and functional test
Periodic major overhaul (often 5-year): Complete review with full documentation
After replacement: Certification and approval of system
We offer service, testing and certification of both existing and new installations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fluorine foam and fluorine-free foam?
Traditional fluorine foam (AFFF) contains PFAS – so-called "forever chemicals" that do not break down in nature. Fluorine-free foam such as BIOEX and ECOPOL use alternative surfactants that are biodegradable and do not accumulate in the environment, while maintaining effective fire suppression power.
Is fluorine-free foam as effective as traditional foam?
Yes, BIOEX and ECOPOL are documented to have comparable fire suppression power to traditional AFFF foam against both hydrocarbons and polar solvents. They are approved for both Class A and B fires and meet relevant international standards (NS-EN 1568, UL 162, IMO).
Can I use fluorine-free foam in my existing system?
In most cases yes, but the system must be thoroughly cleaned before transitioning to fluorine-free foam. We conduct a site visit and recommend the correct procedure based on your specific system and previous foam type. FIREMIKS proportioner is compatible with both fluorine foam and fluorine-free alternatives.
How often must foam concentrate be replaced?
This depends on foam type and storage conditions. BIOEX and ECOPOL typically have 10–20 years shelf life under proper conditions. We recommend annual testing of the concentrate's physical and chemical properties (pH, viscosity, expansion) to ensure optimal performance.
How much does a complete foam system cost?
Price varies significantly based on system size, type of proportioner, amount of concentrate and installation complexity. Contact us for a customized quote based on your specific requirements and needs. We offer both complete new installations and upgrading of existing systems.
How is old fluorine foam handled?
Fluorine foam is classified as hazardous waste and must be handled by approved operators. We ensure regulatory emptying, transport and disposal according to applicable environmental legislation and guidelines. This is included in our foam replacement service.
Which industries use foam systems?
Foam systems are primarily used where there is risk of liquid and oil fires (Class B):
Maritime and offshore (engine rooms, helidecks)
Oil industry (tank farms, process plants, refineries)
Airports (aircraft hangars, fuel facilities)
Petrochemical industry
Storage of flammable liquids
What is the difference between BIOEX and ECOPOL?
BIOEX is the supplier, and ECOPOL is one of their fluorine-free (F3) foam types. Choice of foam depends on application, risk, and requirements. We help you choose the right one for your system.
